The Ford Explorer Is Redesigned for a Sixth Go-Round

Almost three decades after its debut, the Ford Explorer is still going strong. This model year, Ford gives its widely popular SUV a makeover to begin its sixth production cycle, making it a better offering than ever before.

The base 2.3-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine delivers 300 horsepower for remarkable acceleration ability. If you go with the upper-level ST or Platinum trim, that I4 is replaced by the larger and more powerful 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that delivers up to 400 horsepower. Also standard on either trim is the otherwise optional all-wheel drivetrain for maximum performance on slippery surfaces; it comes with a terrain management system to adjust performance based on type or condition of the driving surface. Expect lots of towing ability from the Explorer; the maximum rating is 5,300 lbs with the I4 and 5,600 lbs with the V6.

You will also appreciate the remarkable amount of space that the cabin provides. The latest Explorer is a three-row vehicle that seats up to six people. Passenger volume, measured at 152.7 cubic feet, is generous. Similarly, standard cargo space is convenient, at 18.2 cubic feet. You can fold down the third-row seats to expand the cargo volume to 47.9 cubic feet and both second- and third-row seats for a maximum of 87.8 cubic feet.
